Los Angeles manufacturer of 100% natural bath, body & spa brand signs compact for global production of safer heath & beauty products.
Los Angeles, CA - November 30, 2004 - Bath Petals, an exclusive line of all-natural bath & body products, sold in fine beauty boutiques and day spas, has joined The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and signed their "Compact with America," pledging to produce products that will meet the standards and deadlines set by the European Union Directive 76/768/EEC to be free of chemicals that are known or strongly suspected of causing cancer, mutation or birth defects. By signing this pledge, Bath Petals has joined a growing list of companies committed to manufacturing poison-free cosmetics, for consumers who are looking for natural alternatives to the mass-produced, chemical-laded personal care products that line store shelves.
"Our products are created to enhance relaxation and well-being," said Julie Warnock, co-founder of Bath Petals, a family-run business in Los Angeles, CA. "Harmful chemicals don't belong in products that are meant to promote health - it just doesn't make sense. Each one of our formulas is 100% natural, and doesn't contain any irritating or dangerous ingredients such as methyl or propyl paraben, sodium lauryl sulfate, phthalates, fragrance oils, or petroleum derivatives. We have a number of cancer survivors, who love using Bath Petals, because it is chemical-free, safe and natural.
About The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics
The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (www.safecosmetics.org) is a coalition of public health, educational, religious, labor, women’s, environmental and consumer groups. Our goal is to protect the health of consumers and workers by requiring the health and beauty industry to phase out the use of chemicals that are known or suspected carcinogens, mutagens and reproductive toxins.
The Safe Cosmetics Campaign began in 2002 with the release of a report, "Not Too Pretty: Phthalates, Beauty Products and the FDA." For the report, environmental and public health groups contracted with a laboratory to test 72 name-brand, off-the-shelf beauty products for the presence of phthalates, a family of industrial chemicals linked to permanent birth defects in the male reproductive system.
The lab found phthalates in nearly three quarters of the products tested, though the chemicals were not listed on any of the labels. A second report, "Pretty Nasty," documented similar product test results in Europe.
In February 2003, the European Union passed a new amendment to their Cosmetics Directive that prohibits the use of known or suspected carcinogens, mutagens and reproductive toxins (a.k.a. CMRs) from cosmetics. This amendment went into force in September 2004.
We are asking cosmetics and personal care products companies to make these safer products available in all the markets worldwide where they sell their products.
Founding groups of the campaign include: Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow, The Breast Cancer Fund, Commonweal, Environmental Working Group, Friends of the Earth, Health Care Without Harm, National Black Environmental Justice Network, National Environmental Trust, and Women’s Voices for the Earth. In spring 2004, these groups and more than 50 other organizations signed a letter asking cosmetics companies to take our pledge, the "Compact for the Global Production of Safer Health and Beauty Products."
Together we are working for safer products and smarter laws that protect our health and our families from toxic chemicals.
